Huawei smartphones are overwhelming iPhone and Galaxy

Kantar's Q3 2024 report shows that Huawei is dominating the Chinese market, Apple is leading in the US and Samsung is facing mixed results.

Kantar has just released Comtech's smartphone market share report for the third quarter of 2024. The new report shows that global smartphone sales were largely flat, even down 2% year-on-year due to weak demand in China and Japan.

iPhone wins big in the US

The US saw strong growth in smartphone sales, up 21%, while in Europe sales increased by 13%. Sales in Australia increased by 19%.

Globally, the iPhone 15 remains the most popular smartphone, while Samsung retains its position as the best-selling Android smartphone brand despite losing sales share across all markets.

In the US, Apple is the best-selling smartphone maker. Early data suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro Max could be the best-selling model in the newer iPhone lineup, which is pretty normal for Apple. Samsung, on the other hand, is having a challenging quarter and saw sales decline by 6%. The Galaxy A15 is the company's best-selling model, followed by the Galaxy S24+.

In the US, Google Pixel still holds the third position.

In Europe, Samsung is the top-selling Android phone brand. However, the company's latest foldable phones (Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6) only account for 5% of Samsung's sales.

Google's Pixel phones have risen to third place in the top Android phones, with the Pixel 9 Pro XL being the most popular option in the newly launched Pixel 9 series. Apple remains in second place in Europe, and early data suggests the iPhone 16 Pro is shaping up to be the most sought-after model in the lineup.

Huawei wins in China

After more than three years, Huawei has won the position of the "best-selling" smartphone brand in China. This success is driven by the latest product - Huawei Pura 70, a new brand of P series. However, smartphone demand in China and Japan is weakening, with a decrease of 23% and 16% compared to last year, respectively.

In Japan, Android smartphone market share increased by 2% and the best-selling brand here is Sharp. Sales of Oppo and Xiaomi increased by 3% and 4% respectively in this country.

In Australia, Android phone sales were up 5%. However, the iPhone remained the top-selling phone brand despite declining sales in the region. Samsung came in second (top among Android brands) while Google held on to its third spot.

Artificial Intelligence

Apple released the first wave of Apple Intelligence features on October 28, bringing smarter features. The company is still focused on security and is taking a cautious approach to AI implementation, unlike other manufacturers who are offering more features.

Google has been pushing AI hard on its Pixel phones. 12% of Google Pixel buyers said AI was the main reason they chose the phone, compared to 5% of the market average. However, there has been no significant growth in Pixel sales year-over-year.
